Well, I changed the email to post to this blog, because it looked like someone's email got that nice virus that was going around. What probably happened is that a nice little link got sent to everybody from someone's email address book containing the email to post here (if you remember I gave you all that email a while back).

The Evolution of Speech

Someone on Twitter pointed this out to me so I thought I'd put it here. Apparently NPR did a story about the evolution of speech. Its called "From Grunting to Gabbing: Why Humans Can Talk". I haven't had a chance to look at it, but I thought it looked interesting enough to share with you guys here (that and this is a good way for me to save the link online).

By the way, Kristin and I are thinking starting a general speech therapy blog, anyone who wants to participate is welcome. I'll give you more news in the future.

I end up reading these just because I find them highly amusing. I especially love it when the English is just plain bad. They often don't do their homework when translating their scams, which consequently a dead give away. This one is a little better. I love the mystery. "contact me so I can tell you why I contacted you" OOooooo. Maybe I'm the lost heir of mer Late Yonli Kamara. Maybe I was actually adopted and I never knew it. How did this ever get in my spam folder, its important stuff!!! lol

Social Networking for SLPs

So, I've been networking with several speech therapist over the web, via twitter. Its been pretty useful, and sometimes therapeutic. I can grip about students to people who understand. I can get therapy ideas for my functional skills group. Sometimes we just chat in general. Of course all of the talk of students is done very vaguely without names, but its been nice, especially since I don't get to talk to other speech therapist more than 2-3 times a month.

One of my twitter friends wrote a nice little blog entry describing the benefits of social networking for SLPs. @RhiannanW wrote an article called "Start Tweeting, Speechies!". You should give it a read over, or at least go to her website Therapy Ideas which is a great resource for SLPs in general.

Hi Friends and Former Classmates,

This is your long lost pal JoLynne. As some of you know I currently live in Nova Scotia, Canada and my husband Curtis is in his 2nd year of dental school. We had a handsome baby boy in June and I am staying home playing the mommy role. I will continue to do so until we move back to the states.

I am currently a member of CASLPA. It is the Canadian version of ASHA. I want to stay as currents as I can so that when I do move elsewhere I can find a job and not feel completely in the dark. There are a few things I don't know that I would like to get a better grasp on. Does anyone have any information on lisps they can send my way as well as info on tounge thrust? I am going to study on my own in addition to the continuing ed credits I am required to learn so I can be even more prepared to jump into work. Does anyone have any advice on where I should start or areas you wish you would have been more prepared for before hitting the work force? I am interested in preschool/elementary, possibly middle school age.

I am willing to make materials and use this time I have at home wisely. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Has anyone bought any books they absolutely love?

Too many IEPs

So, for you who aren't in the schools I just thought I'd make you feel better about yourself. Okay, so I have 9 IEPs next week. None of them that I schedule so they are almost all during my therapy time. /sigh. Luckily 4 of them are preschool transitioning IEPs which I don't have to do any work except show up.

Anyway, where setting are you working in? What are the pros and cons with your setting? I think overall the high amount of paperwork is probably a con across settings (like IEPs).

Funny kids

So, I have a very fun creative and "out there" student I've been working with. Her teacher told me about a conversation they had:

Student: "Do you want to meet my Auntie?"
Teacher: "Sure I do."
Student: "No you don't, cause she's mean with a side of nastiness and she has a mustache."

I'm finishing up the /r/ sound with this kid at the conversation level. I gave her the option of either using conversation cards or just telling me a story. She decided to tell me a story (name in the story isn't her real name of course):

"Once upon a time there was an Amy and she was really great. And that's my story."

We ended up using conversation cards.

Social Skills Lesson

Hey Bob,
I love that you are so diligent about trying to keep us all in touch. I would love to try to get together sometime this spring or summer. Here is a little story for the blog.

I work with two third grade students that face some intellectual challenges. The little girl got in trouble because she was hugging and kissing the boys during recess. So I thought it time to bump up the social skills lessons. She came into me and blurted out that the little boy was not coming because he was mad at her. I took that opportunity to talk about personal space, hugging and kissing are for our families, we give high 5's at school, you know the drill. As we finished practicing some of those skills in walks the little boy. Who was mad because the little girl had been hugging him. So I launch into a repeat discussion and we practice a couple more times. They were both so excited they wanted me to take their picture to use in a social story. She says, "Let me practice one more time". After she appropriately approaches the little boy and he appropriately responds, I praise and praise. The little boy gets so excited he jumps up and gives the little girl a hug.

I was working with a 5th grade kid, who is on the autism spectrum, today. We was getting a baseline for the voiceless "th" sound. I started with a word list with the sound in the medial position. The first word was "anything". So, I said, "Say anything." The student complied and said "goose". I was a little befuddled at first, it took me a second to realize that he was just following my instructions.

But no, at this point the student informs me that she really did forget, she just came out of her class to use the bathroom. So, instead of patiently wait for her (she's a 6th grader, she doesn't need me to wait), I decided to write this blog post. Oh, there she is now.

Rants of /r/ articulation therapy

Oh, I just want to rant a little bit. I'm sick of /r/ kiddos not progressing. My younger kids make some good progress, but my 6th graders are making no progress. I don't know what to do short of grabbing their tongue and putting it in the right spot. Errr... (or rather Ehhhhh). Anyway, who's still in the schools? Anybody have any good ideas for /r/ articulation therapy for older students?]

Fellow SLPs! It's been TOO long! I miss you all. It is time for a blog entry from each of us. I know Linds had a baby since I last saw her, Rachel moved, Bob's wife is pregnant again (right?) and I need to know more!
I'm still working at UofU Hospital and I love it but sometimes I think about doing traveling therapy. Have any of you ever thought of that? Good money, lots of adventure?
I get my very first student on Monday- she's straight from our beloved USU, and I am excited and a little nervous to share my incompetence...er, knowledge with another. :)
I heard Gantz isn't teaching anymore, and that Chad still is, and also works for Prenke-Romich AAC company. I saw Gillam at ASHA, and that PhD student who's name escapes me right now. Anyway, let's reunite and eat good food soon! That last party at Fat Cats was fun. Love y'all!

grammar errors

So, I had to write this real quick. I don't know why, because its pretty embarrassing. Okay, so as a speech therapist people hold me to a higher level of speaking. This is the frequent joke when I accidentally say something that doesn't make sense and everybody laughs. ha ha ha ha... (almost like that what about bob joke that never dies......) So, in an IEP (Individual Education Plan) for a student that really has some serious issues with verbal grammar to the point where its hard to understand him... so on the part where I write what the student needs to do (so and so needs to be able to produce grammatically correct sentences blaa blaa blaa). I apparently made a big grammar error when writing this sentences to the point where it didn't make sense when you read it out loud. When do I catch my mistake? As I'm reading it to the parents of the student in question. I'm just really inspiring the confidence of that parent that I can really help her son.

pros and cons of school speech therapy

So, since any excitement has died out for this blog (not that I think it was ever there), I'm going to use this blog more to talk about my endeavors at work, seeing how you people would understand better than anyone else.

So, what are the pros and cons for deciding to work in schools instead of the hospitals?

Pros:
June July Aug,
better benefits (because you are technically a state employee).
you see progress with younger kids (as oppose to working in a nursing home)
lots of vacation days
you can leave earlier (if you don't have about a million things to do which we normally do)
no weekends
kids are cute

Cons:
pay is less (but when you consider summers off and all the holidays off its actually pretty close).
high high high caseloads
usually you have to see kids in groups
lots of paperwork
a closet for an office
kids with behavior problems
teachers that won't work with your schedule.

hmm, is it worth it? I don't know, June July and August is a pretty big motivator.

Hey, a few of us met for lunch on June 28th in Salt Lake. It was great to see you guys! We had Kristin and spouse, Lindsey and spouse, Genna (spouse + baby boy), Stephanie, and myself (plus my family). We went to Fat Cats Pizza Factory in South Salt Lake. Hopefully we'll be able to do something like this again sometime.

So, Janet said that she would be willing to host the next party/get together. So, I'm looking forward to seeing you guys again.

Oh, and it was fun to see a bunch of you at the summer seminars at Utah State University. Stephanie, Pam, Linda and I got a chance to go out to eat.

It's a boy!

Well, I'm at a hospital computer, so I can't post pictures yet, but our baby was born last night. Logan James was born at 7:14 last night, 8 lbs 6 oz, 21 1/2 in. Everything went really smoothly. We're really excited. Once we get home we'll upload some pictures.

I just accidently had a baby 4 weeks early (at 36 weeks). So...Yea, everything is good he was born May 13, at 14:59 weighing in at 7 lbs, 4 oz, and he is 19.5 inches long. Just imagine if I had actually gone full term...Ouch.

Hey everybody, we're trying to plan a party to celebrate the end of our CFYs. Yay!!! Anyway, I know there are several people outside of you :( so we know not everybody will be able to come, but we're not sure what day to schedule the party.

Here is an email I got from Kristin about the whole thing. So please le me know what day you guys would prefer. As always, someone will have a conflict with everyday, that's just how it goes, so will pick the day that has the least problems. Give us your input on which day.

Howdy people

So, I only have 3 more IEPs this week then only 7 next week. Almost done, as long as our baby doesn't come in the middle of all of that. Lindy has been having a really hard time with this pregnancy (the two little girls don't help much). Our little girls are too young to yet be helpful. At least Sydney is mostly pretty independent. Savannah isn't though, she's a handful. She was absolutely crazy at church. What can you expect from a 15 month old that you are trying to get to sit still? The next couple of months are going to be challenging. Sure, I work for the school district so I'll get time off this summer, but I work at a year round school, so I won't get time off anytime soon. But we have family that will help us out, so we should be just fine.

I'm in sort of a rush to get them all done because my wife, Lindy, is due at the end of May and I would like to spend a few days with her and the baby (and my other two daughters). A movie to see

I'm going to try write more on this blog, since I know there are at least a few readers. I came across an article talking about the stories of people with communication disorders. They talked briefly about a movie that I didn't know about (I rarely keep up with movies these days unless its a disney princess show - that's what happens when you are the parent of little girls). Anyway, the movie is called The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, based on Jean-Dominiques Bauby's autobiography, same title. This man had a brain stem stroke which resulted in lock-in syndrome. He dictated the whole book with someone pointing to letters and having him blink to select one. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I saw the preview. It is in french, but there are english subtitles (so if you don't like foreign films then this isn't for you). I just thought this might be a cool thing for us speechies. I'm sure some of you were already aware of it and I'm the slow one (which is the case 9 times out of 10), but I just thought I'd share.

CCCs Almost here

I'm excited to finally get my CCCs (not so excited to pay ASHA dues). Are any of you guys going to start doing private practice right away? I want to do that, but I'm nervous about it. I'm afraid I don't think to highly of my skills (I think I'm getting better, but I still have a long way to go). I had an SLP here in Davis County say that there is actually a pretty high demand for private pratice in Utah (people are willing to pay to some degree). Not as good as other states, but like I said before, what am I going to do? Get my whole family to move with us somewhere. Bring the state that I grew up in with us? Besides the crap wages, I really do like living in Utah.

Anyway, I know people are checking this from time to time, so I'm trying to give them new things to read. Remember you can leave messages yourselves if you use that email I sent you guys. If you need another copy of the blog email then let me know.

I know you are reading this blog because I've seen the hits. I'm not sure which one of you live in Arizona. Where did everybody end up? I haven't heard from Steve in a while.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying working in the schools. I'm probably get paid the least, but what do you do when you want to stay in Utah. I have a year-round school and I've had an interesting time with the ever changing schedule, but next year my school is going traditional. But in my school district I always work on the regular schedule and get paid extra. I don't think it worked like that in some of the other districts (Melia, what is it like over in Jordan school district?). I work at an elementary school and a jr high. So, I have kids from K-9. Lots of fun. Anyways, I'm going to leave more messages about speech stuff here because know some of you at least glance at this website.

54 days, woot!

So I feel bad for the people who don't have gmail. If you don't you should get it, that will make the constant emailing less annoying. If you still need an invite. I can throw you one. My baby is due June 10th. So today is March 10th, welcome to the third trimester. For those of you who are so concerned about me finishing my CFY, there is no longer need to fret, or stress me out with zillions of Job offers. The private practice I worked for over the summer wants me back as soon as I'm ready, so that's what I'll be doing. I will only need 8 weeks of the minimal 15 hours per week, so that should be doable with a baby (not that I'd know). But anyway, that's the good news.

The headaches are annoying, they say you can sleep them off but that's a bunch of crap (in my case anyway). I end up needing to take tylenol. That's what they say is safe during pregnancy. AWESOME!!!! Go Genna, Lindee, Lindsey, and Arianna/Janet. Anyone else keeping a secret? All these babies coming are awesome. You would really think us Mormons are single handedly trying to populate the earth. So what if we are????? Both of my brothers just had babies. My two best friends from high school are having babies this summer. My sister in law is also due this summer and Luke's cousin is having twins this summer. Oh and there are 3 people in our branch besides me who are having babies this summer. If "Saturday's Warrior" is true, then that baby sending station in heaven is totally booked for this summer. JK!
Go Genna for getting pregnant first. That is quite a feat! It is too bad about your CFY though. You will get done! Luke and I had to wait until our insurance kicked in to be covered which was one December 1st. The doctor predicted that the baby was actually conceived on Dec 1 or maybe even on Nov 30. Oops! What can I say? We didn't jump the gun at all... NOT! Good thing insurance can't count back that far!!
So when is everyone's due date?
Mine is August 25. And get this. Luke and I met each other at 8:30 in the morning on Aug. 25, 2003 (that is when we all had our first class with Sonia and she made us go around and meet 10 people and get their signatures). Then we got engaged at 8:30 AM on Aug 25, 2004 because Luke planned it that way (so sweet). And now our baby is set to be born Aug 25, 2008. Crazy how things work out huh? It probably won't come on the right day but you never know.
Congrats to everyone. I have to go make some dinner. Is anyone having constant headaches? HELP!

Congrats to all you baby bellied girls. I am excited for you all. Yes, I believe I was first. My daughter Arianne is expecting her first baby Sept 12. This will be my fourth grandbaby. Sorry guys but grandbabies are the best!!! I am keeping busy with my job in the schools. The case load just keeps climbing. (Job security) I am looking forward to a lazy summer of no work, no classes and full of vacations. You are all welcome to stop by and visit me this summer.

getting your CCCs

Here’s in update on what I found out about applying for your CCCs. There is a paper in the packet that Dr. Foley needs to sign before you can submit your paperwork. I suggest doing it early, because I sent it to he about 2 weeks ago and she hasn’t sent it back. I am just waiting on that before I can submit my paperwork. As far as all the other paperwork goes you have to send in the Rating form you and your supervisor have filled out, your application form to become a member of ASHA, and fork over your $$ ($336 if you were a member of NSSHLA for 2 years). Here is the page on ASHA with all the details-- http://www.asha.org/about/membership-certification/how_to_apply_for_certification.htm. The last page in the Application Instructions and Form for 2005 Speech-Language Pathology Certification Standards is what Dr. Foley has to sign. Hope this helps everyone.

Congrats on all the upcoming babies! Can’t wait to see all the cute pictures! I have some news that I am excited to share, too (no, not pregnant!) but it has to wait for a few more days. Hope everyone is doing well. I am jealous of all you guys who are soaking up the sun right now. Winter has definitely won this year in Utah!

Hi Guys!
I just wanted to let you know that we are officially having..... yes... you guessed.... A BABY!!! YAY! I am suprised that I am only the second in our group to become pregnant. I am due on September 16th. I am currently in my eleventh week, and we got to see the baby last week wiggling around in the ultrasound. It's so exciting. Amazingly, I have felt really good. Very little sickness. How is everyone else doing? Almost done with CFYs?

Applying for CCCs

Is anyone getting ready to apply for their CCCs? I am starting the process and there is a paper that has to be signed by Dr. Foley. I wish they would have told us these things prior to graduating and moving on. I was just wondering how you were going to handle it. Mail it to her and have her mail it back? Fax it? Any other good ideas other than driving up there? If you starting your CFY in May or the beginning of June than you should be pretty much finished. The CFY has to only be 36 weeks long, which is a little shorter than if you count it month by month. Anyway, if anyone else is applying let's talk about the process.

Hello, hello! I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and let you all read about my not-so-interesting life. I am still at Intermountain Medical Center working on the rehab floor. I am really enjoying it. There is a possibility of switching to acute in March-April, which I think I will also enjoy. I am working on my FEES certification. It seems to be going well, if only I could get my leg to stop shaking. There is something about putting a camera in someone’s nose that makes me a little bit nervous. My CFY is officially over in February. I can’t wait to start signing everything with CCC! I also have a blog, as Alexis mentioned. Check us out at billsology.blogspot.com. Hey long lost classmates! It's nice to hear from some of you. Yay for Alyssa and Genna for starting their own blogs! (Rachel too - I saw your link on Alyssa's page a couple days ago and must admit to blog-stalking you since then. Your stories are just too funny to pass up.) Can't wait for the rest of you to come out of the woodwork soon and let everyone know you are still alive. I blog now too, which is probably apparent since Bob went ahead and put a link to my blog here. So, come visit it anytime. It has been a fun way to keep in touch with friends. We rarely post anything informative or interesting but we do post!

Things in Lawrence are great. I'm having a good old time working for the public schools in Topeka. I work in an urban district with preschool and elementary-age kids from low SES homes (almost 100% of my kids qualify for free school lunch). In all my IEP meetings I have not yet come across a "traditional" 2-parent family. Most of my kids are raised primarily by their grandparents, single moms, foster parents, aunts, etc. They have crazy little lives and they have lots of needs but most days I love hanging out with them.

I'd love to hear from you guys more often! Hope everyone is doing well.

Baby Bateman Boy

We found out last week that we are going to have a boy! Sydney and Savannah are going to have a baby brother. We're excited (and a little nervous) to have our 3rd child. We kind of wished we had spaced them out a little better, but what do you do. For a few months each year their years will be right in a row (Sydney 3, Savannah 2, baby boy 1, or later on 6-5-4, etc). Wow we are gluttons for punishment. But it will be good. Sydney likes to pat Lindy's tummy and say "hi baby brother" and Savannah is completely oblivious to it (which she should). By the way, Savannah is turning one on Thursday (Jan 17th). We got a really cute picture of her at a photo studio on Saturday. When we get it back I'll post it, she has a cute red dress and hat on. Anyway, without any new pictures this post is pretty much pointless so I'll end it right now.

job opportunity

I forgot to mention that Kids on the Move the company I work for is looking to hire an SLP as well. It is an EI job that pays well. It would be a 40 hour job where you go into families homes and teach them speech and language skills. You work in conjunction with OT's PT's and Providers (cognitive dev) to provide appropriate services. It is a really great job and I love the SLP's here. They have helped me so much. I have three CFY supervisors, okay one who signs the papers, but they all have given me so much help and let me know that even though I think I am a fraud, I am doing great. I also have another job announcement. If anyone is looking for a one day a week job working in a charter school let me know. The school is in SLC and pays $30 an hour. It would be a time committment of 5-7 hours one day a week. Your supervisor would be Carin Hadley (ring a bell kristen or melia?) It sounds like it would be a good side job for those who are looking for more work. Let me know if any of you are interested in either.

Some already know this but I'm gonna have a kid of some kind or another. YAY!! we will find out what kind it is in 2 weeks so until then I'm sure all of you will be on pins and needles. Anyway, that's the news. I'm due June 10th. Which makes timing our move back to the rockies interesting. My doctor doesn't want me traveling with a week and a half to go (what nonsense). And we need to move back to regain jobs and places to live. So I will get to go through the joy of leaving my job (and my CFY) 4 weeks early. Thus receiving the further joy of figuring out a second site for my last 4 weeks of my CFY.

Hello y'all, I hope you are all enjoying your time off if you work in the schools, if you don't then I hope you enjoy your day off. I guess there are some perks to working in the schools. I've actually really enjoyed working in the schools. I love working with the elementary kids. I especially like the older grades (however, they start getting attitudes in 5th grade) I like 3rd and 4th grade the most. I do think my kindergartens are cute/funny. I had two phonological kids trying to talk to each other. They each told me that they couldn't understand the other. It was a classic moment.

I let a parent talk me into dressing up as Santa Clause for the kindergartens. That was pretty amusing. I had several kids from different grades following me down the hall. It was hilarious! I'm starting to look into doing per diem work to supplement my income when I'm not working in the schools. I don't know if I'll ever go completely medical, but it would be nice to keep my foot in the door.

What's going on with you guys. According to Jackie, they still need SLPs with Mountainland Rehab, if you are looking for a job that is. I think we are all employed, or somewhat happy with our situations. Anyway, merry christmas, and have a happy new year!

Okay, so I've seen that this website has been getting hits. I know you are out there, even if you don't reply or comment. How is your CFY going? Are we all surviving? I'm having fun. I'm liking the elementary schools a lot more than I thought I would. I really love working with the kids. I'm not so sure about the jr high, but we'll see how that goes. Luke and I are off to the Florida beaches BABY! We are working for the school year in two rural schools near Panama City Beach area (Northwest in the Bay/ Panhandle). It has connections with a private practice in Boise so we can come back and work there any after are CFY's or stay longer. We are looking forward to it but are a little scare too. We leave the end of July! Congratulations no the job with Davis! We interviewed with them too. What school age are you working with?
Good luck. You can always work per diem Medical to get your foot in the door. Don't forget that! How did your medical internship go? Where was it at again?

I know that I'll be working at an elementary school, but they have told me which one yet. I don't start until mid august. I did my medical externship at South Davis Community Hospital in Bountiful. For the summer, I'm working at a place called Celebration Speech Therapy Services. It is a private practice owned by the mother of my 17 year old best lifeguard friend. I get paid an obscene amount of money for doing something we were all doing for free last month. Scratch that, we were actually paying for it. Anyway, in the fall we are really moving to texas and I'm really working in a ghetto school district down there. Alex will student teach down there, and people keep telling us to not live within the district. Scary..
Anyway, that's me, the other part of the time, I'm teaching lots of swimming lessons and coaching swim team. So, I'm making money this summer to say the least.

:) Oh, and another little secret I found is that there are speech
"aides" called Communication Specialists and you can request them
whenever and they can come do therapy for you while you prep/test or
they make copies and bulletin boards or ANYTHING. It was awesome. I
requested them all the time and they work shockingly fast. Cool,
right?
By the way, this is to everyone (sorry this is turning into a novel).
I am engaged! Yes, it's exciting. The date is September 22, so mark

Hi all, For the summer I am not working. Well, not at a paying job anyway.
I have painted the exterior of my house, painted several rooms on the
interior, laid tile in my basement, etc. You get the picture we are putting
our house on the market in July. Our new house has basement walls so far,

Hey kids,
So, everybody probably already knows this but I am working at LDS Hospital.
I really like it so far. I am working 7 on/7 off. Going to work Sunday
morning (my last day of my 7 on) is pretty tough, but having a week off is
nice. I move to the new IHC Hospital in Sandy in October. It didn't really
hit me that I was actually graduated and working as an "official" SLP until
I had to call a Dr. and say "this is Rachel Bills, a speech therapist at LDS
hospital". That was pretty fun :)!! I was sent to a FEES training this last
weekend and ran into Wes Godfrey. I even got to practice doing FEES on him!!
They tried to pass the scope in my nose, but couldn't get the camera through
- most likely because I broke my nose when I was little - and that really
hurt!! If you ever get to go to FEES training and someone passing the scope
says, "wow, I am not sure if we can get the scope through there", just tell
them to stop right then!!
Anyway, everything is going really well for me at my new job. And just so
everyone knows I did exactly what I always said I was going to do when I got
my first paycheck.....hired someone to clean my house! She is worth every
penny! :)
Let's keep these coming guys, I want to know what everyone is doing!

Exam results must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in order to be applicable toward certification. When you register to take the exam, request that your score be reported directly to ASHA. ETS charges an additional fee to report scores after the examination has been taken.

To have ETS report your score to ASHA use the code R-5031 for Certification on the exam Registration Form as indicated in the ETS "Registration Bulletin."

Your score will be sent to the ASHA National Office within 8 weeks of the examination date. The National Office is able to automatically match scores with individuals only if your application for certification is on file with the Certification office at the time the score is received and if a computer record has been established for you.

To assist the National Office in processing your examination information, it will be helpful if you submit a copy of the report sent to you by the testing service when you submit your application for certification. However, please note that this copy will not be used as official verification of completion of the examination requirement.

Okay kids, am I the only one that is confused? Did we find out if we need any more info about the CFY? On the COMD website it says they are going to send us a packet, did anyone get one? For those of you that have already started working what paperwork do I need? Are you starting the application process now or after you do your CFY? On the ASHA website it says to start now. It also says we need the program director’s signature for the ASHA application as well as the teacher license (I am doing that too), so do I have to go back up to Logan and have someone sign these things?

I feel a little but like we have all been left hanging without any real answers.

Or maybe I am freaking out because I start my CFY tomorrow!! Either way let me know what you all know. J (i.e. help!!!!)

So, I attempted to start the paperwork, I dug around on the Idaho equivalent of USHA for a little while and found the paperwork for my state. it seems like even though you are starting a CFY you don't actually fill anything out until you are done. Although, I think it is good to get going on the paperwork now, just so you know everything that is involved. It turns out that the hours I'm getting this summer won't count toward my CFY so I don't have to worry about it until fall. at a later time, I might be able to scan my forms and show ya'll what I have if that would help.

I hope I helped instead of making everyone crazy again like I managed to do for the Praxis.

How to make a post

How do I make a post? What you need to do is first sign in to blogger by going to https://blogger.com/start. There will be place in the top right hand side that says “Sign in to Blogger” and another that says “Sign in to the Blogger in beta”. Pick the one that says “Sign in to Blogger” Then you’ll see a space where you can put your user name and password. If you have forgotten your user name and/or password then follow this weblink: http://www.blogger.com/forgot.g. This should give you a chance to receive an e-mail of your user name and password. After you have done this, you’ll be prompted to enter your google account information or create a google account. Once you’ve done this you’ll use this instead of your previous user name and password.

After you have done this you will always choose the “Sign in to the Blogger in beta” which is at the following website: https://beta.blogger.com/start. Once you’ve signed in you will be taken to the “Dashboard”. At this page you’ll see the USU SLPs of ’07 and underneath this there will be a green plus sign with a “New Post” next to it. That is where you’ll be able to post a message, post pictures, or whatever you would like (within reason).

Going beta

The blog is now on the beta version of blogger. What does that mean? Well, there are some new features and... when you sign in you'll have to transfter over to the beta version, it will have you go through a little process. If you already have gmail account it will be easier. Overall it will be quick and painless. I assume some of us will be using this blog a lot more often. I took the blog off any listing so we should be okay to post things like phone numbers and stuff. I would still be cautious.

I thought it was so fun to see everyone again and hear what you all did over the summer. I still want to hear like what was the hardest thing and the funniest thing, etc because just telling the name of the site where you were at doesn't give it justice. I wanted to tell you that my mom thinks you guys are all great because it is very difficult to be watched and supervised all of the time. We always have people looking over our shoulder to see how, what, where, when, asking why we do things, and seeing how professional we are. I think it is very stressful and nerve racking so I just wanted to say I agree with my mom. We are all great for standing the pressure. And it is almost over! Way to go.

Welcome back to school. It was good see everybody again. I know we're not going to see each other as much this semester because we'll be in the schools most of the time. But we still have those classes together. I'm excited for this semester, partly because IT'S OUR LAST SEMESTER OF CLASSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so ready to be done with school. Hey everyone,

I hope you all have had a great relaxing summer, Hahaha!!! It has gone much too quickly for me. I am not ready to step back into the race of clients and classes. Highlights of my summer included my son getting home fom his mission, my daughter getting her braces off, kids swimming lessons and taking ALL of our kids to lagoon (19 of us, what a riot), internships for
early intervention birth-to-three and Wide Horizons a residential care facilitiy for adults.

Weber school distrcit is desperately looking for slp's for this school year. They have hired many first year grads in the past to work part time. They do not want to hire bachelor degrees unless they can not find enough people to fill the posistions. They will give you plenty of supervision and expereince in the field. I am going to work for them one day a week this next year. They asked me to spread the word if anyone is intersted let me know and I will get you the contact info.

I can't wait to hear all about your experiences in your eternships. See you all in a few weeks,

Hi Guys!
This summer has gone by so fast! I have been at McKay-Dee this summer. I have been able to do everything from modified barium studies to working with right hemisphere and aphasia patients. It has been quite the experience. The main reason I am writing is because I have to do an inservice for all the rehab therapists (SLP/OT/PT). I decided to do it on memory. I was just wondering if anyone remembered the activities that Dr. Foley did with us to test procedural, declarative, etc memory. I remember it being something with dinosaurs, but I don't have any mention of it in my neuro notebook. SO, if anyone can remember (and if anyone is checking their email) would you please let me now asap? Thanks so much. Can't wait to catch up with everyone!

Internet access limited

It seems that either everybody's internet access has been limited or we didn't like each other as much as we thought, or technophobia has gripped the Comd department or whatever. My excuse is that I have limited access to the internet (I don't go to the school computer labs on a regular basis anymore).

Anyway, how is everyone's summer going? I just got done with my externships. I was at pioneer care center in Brigham City for a week (nursing home rehab stuff), South Davis Community Hospital for three weeks (more rehab stuff), and Riverside special needs preschool for 4 weeks. And now I have a little freedom before we start up again.

I loved doing the externships. I feel like I might actually survive being an SLP now. Pretty cool!!!! Well, I know that Alexis reads this. Zeke tried to leave a message, but it didn't work for one reason or another. I hope to see you guys soon.

Externships

Hello, y'all. I'm at a rehab hospital in Bountiful now, it was in Brigham City. There was a bunch of confusion about where my externship was going to be. My supervisor hadn't received her CCC's yet because ASHA kept dropping the ball. So, I spent a week at care/rehab center there and now I'm at a rehab hosptial. I'm only going to be here for three weeks. But I love it here. We have a ton of trach and vent patients. We do a lot of dysphagia treatment, but I've also seen TBI, aphasia, apraxia, left-neglect, and dementia. We also occasionally see babies. Its pretty interesting. After this I'm going to be at a special needs preschool.

What are you guys doing?

Hi everyone who uses the BLOG. I have finally had the time to create an account and write a message. We are in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains (more like rolling hills -we are 4 miles from the big bear ski mountiain and its more like what we would go sledding on). We went and toured NYC yesterday. Times square was awesome, ground zero was humbling, and the empire state building was breathtaking (Luke made me write that). Oh I will also tell you that we arrived at the ferry departure place to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty right as the guy was locking up the door on account of Luke having to go to the bathroom. I was sad but hey that means that before we head back to Utah in August we get to go again. I won't complain. There are 150 staff members and 150 campers all packed into a couple of buildings and playing/learning on about 5-8 acres of land. We have a swimming pool and a lake and get to go swimming everyday. It's really rough. Luke and I both have 34 kids we give therapy to once a day. We haven't started yet and so are a little intimidated by the large number but our supervisor is really cool. She is really easy going and graduated from Florida State University.
The wierdest thing so far is how we all eat. They call it "family style." Everyone sits at a table and they put the first bowl of say salad on the table. Then everyone passes the plates and the silverware around. Then they pass the bowl of salad around. After everyone is done eating the salad, everyone passes their plates into the garbage and new plates are passed back out. Then the main dish is passed around the table in the same way. We throw our plates away and then get bowls. Then the fruit comes in the same way. So in other words every dish of food is touched by every person around the table before you finally get to eat it. Talk about infection control. You'd think they would do it buffet style. Hmmm... Well there is lots more I could say but I am sure you have read all or more than you wanted to hear.
I hope all of your externships are going good and you are learning a lot. We are going to have like 100 language hours when we finish. AAAAH.
Do you guys like the humidity back east or the dry heat in Utah better?

Well, a few of us got together on Friday to go out to eat and see Alyssa's at her wedding reception. We had a grand time, even if we were all lost (except for Kristin).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Genna is having a sailing get together at Bear Lake on June 17th (a Saturday). Lindsey said that she'd help plan something more local like a picnic or something.

How's everybody's externships? I'm at a care/rehab center working with older people. I've only been there for two days so far, but I really like it. I love hearing the clients' stories. We work mostly on swallowing, with some cognitive work for dementia.

Dinner and a Wedding Reception

Okay, there is now a small group of us that want to get together for dinner and Alyssa's wedding reception. Genna said that she wants to go to dinner before the reception. Is everyone else all right with that?

Alyssa's reception is in West Jordan and starts at 7pm. We could meet at 5:30pm or 6:00pm at a local restaurant. There are a ton of restaurants over there. Any suggestions?

Who wants to go to lunch on June 2nd in Logan or maybe we could do dinner in Salt Lake because a lot of people are already going to Alyssa's wedding reception. I know that not everyone can go, but at least some of us could hang out.

I don't know about any of you, but I for one was pretty much devastated when the Fabulous First Year Grad Student Barbeque, Talent Show and Swap Meet was cancelled. I found this a website that gave tips and examples of resumes, cover letters, and interviews all specific to SLPs. I just thought that this might be helpful for other people and I wanted to remember where I found it in the future.

Just wanted to post (for the hundreds of people who read "the blog") that the Fabulous First Year Grad Student Barbeque, Talent Show, and Swap Meet will be held tomorrow, or in other words, Wednesday. I personally will be doing a hawaiian hula number and then auctioning off my hula skirt at the swap meet later. Okay, so there really is no talent show or swap meet, but there is a barbeque. Yum. Bring your own meat (or soy product if you prefer) to grill, and bring a side to share. The shindig starts at 5:30, which means people will start arriving by 6, which means we'll be able to finally start consuming the food around 6:30 or 7. So come! It'll be fun.

Some of us got talking over lunch about how little we actually know about each other. When we get together we talk about speech-language pathology. We did try to make a rule at the Christmas party to not talk about school, but we soon realized that we have a hard time talking about anything else. Now granted school has been our life for the last few years, but hopefully there is more to us than just school. So, we need to learn more about each other.

So, you need to tell us something we don't already know about you. Something interesting that you are comfortable sharing with us. Hear is my interesting thing. I once had hair, and to prove it I’m adding a picture with me with hair:

I want all my fellow grad students to know how pleased I am that we now finally have our own blogger site. I have never had one of htese before. I can't decided if I sould feel cool or nerdy??
